Hike Changes - Jan 19 and Feb 2, 2020
Due to schedule conflicts, we are changing the dates on 2 Sunday hikes. Here are the hikes for Sun. Jan. 19 and Sun. Feb. 2 (note different meeting locations): SUN. JAN. 19 JACOB'S NATURE PARK Hike: 2+ miles Rating: Easy Drive: 2 miles We will approach Jacob’s Park from the Tweetsie Trailhead. Within the park, there are easy loops around the wetlands and along Sinking Creek, and a moderately difficult loop that ascends the ridge. The wetlands of Sinking Creek are for education and water quality study. There is a cave beside the ridge trail that we may spot, and there are mature trees in the ridge forest. The park is named in memory of young Jacob Francisco who lived along Sinking Creek. Leader: Roy Holcomb, (423) 926-1313. Depart Arby's 1:15 p.m. SUN. FEB. 2 DOE RIVER GORGE Hike: 5 miles (in / out ) Rating: Easy Drive: 8 miles ($1) The trail follows the railroad of the ET & WNC “Tweetsie” route through the Doe River Gorge with its cliffs towering hundreds of feet above and its trove of rare plants covering the ground cliffs and stream side. The trail passes through two tunnels and has an easy grade. Because the tunnel distance is short, there should be ample light to watch our footing. Leader: Janice Miller, (423) 543-5602. Depart Elizabethton High School 1:15 p.m. |
Schedule Changes
We have some adjustments to our summer schedule. Our hike originally scheduled for Aug. 10 will be this Saturday. Our hike on Aug. 10 will be to Flint Rock Overlook on Holston Mountain. Also, one of our members is organizing a raft trip on the French Broad River, and she is opening it to her hiking friends. This trip is with a licensed outfitter, and each raft has a certified guide. The trip is not a club-sponsored event. More details are below. SAT. AUG. 3 MOUNT ROGERS NATIONAL RECREATION AREA (Joint with Johnson City Hiking Club) Hike: 10 Miles Rating: Strenuous Drive: 89 miles ($12) We will start on the Jackie Street Trail (Little Wilson Creed Wilderness) and end at the AT Fox Creek (Lewis Fork Wilderness) intersection with Rt #603. We will climb for the greater part of the first 4 miles on old road & horse trails. Jackie Street Trail will take us 2 miles to First Peak Trail. Then, following it up hill crossing Second Peak, 4857', to Third Peak we come to fantastic views of Walker Mtn., Pine Mtn, and the Mt Rogers ridges. Then we drop down to Scales completing 5 miles. From here we will take the AT to Fox Creek, over Pine Mtn. starting with a climb and then a descent. If this date has "weather" it will be exchanged with the hike on September 21 to avoid being on a high bald with lightening; watch your email notification. Hike leader: Marcia Pruner H (276) 889-5714 or C (276) 614-5504. Depart from behind Red Pig BBQ on Brownsmill Rd in Krogers parking lot 8:00 a.m. NOTE DIFFERENT DEPARTURE LOCATION! SAT. AUG. 10 HOLSTON MOUNTAIN / FLINT ROCK Hike: 7 Miles Rating: Moderate Drive: 24 Miles ($3) A lot of the climbing on this hike will be in our vehicles as we drive up Panhandle Road toward Holston Mountain Fire Tower. We pick up the blue-blazed Holston Mountain Trail and follow it to Flint Mill Gap. Slightly to the left is the Flint Mill Trail which leads us to Flint Rock. Bring your binoculars to identify places in the Holston Valley below. We return by the same route or we can take a more gentle grade Forest Service Road from Flint Mill Gap which leads us directly back to our cars. As we pass Blue Hole on our way on Panhandle Road, we may stop and see this popular waterfall. Leader: Judy Middlemas, (423) 282-6987. Depart Arby's 8:00 a.m.; Food City, Elizabethton 8:15 a.m. FRENCH BROAD RAFT TRIP A bunch of us Old Timers are attempting to organize a rafting trip on the French Broad for next Tuesday August 6. The 3 hour raft ride, with class 2 & 3 rapids and lunch included, will start in Marshall, NC at 10:00. The cost is $60 (rain or shine, non-refundable) You can reserve your spot by calling US Raft and asking to be included in the “Old Timers” group. 1-800-872-7238 If 9 or more sign up, we can all get a $5 discount.
